Okay.. So this started when we were tormented by rats at our house. So we got a Tom (Male cat is called Tom) and named it "Meow". Meow did give us a huge relief from the rendezvous the rats had in our house , but in turn Meow started inviting his girl friend home every other night, whom we promptly named "Shalyam" , which in Malayalam translates to Trouble.
Now Meow and Shalyam had a wonderful life in our house. But then to my horror when i returned home from my internship at Bangalore , I was shocked to see Shalyam lwith her little kittens in my cupboard, I was shattered. Mom asked me not to disturb Meow's family and so I just walked away extremely displeased.
Now the point if writing this blog.. Over the next few days I was awe struck by nature's way of putting things in place. While Meow never ever cared to even once go and look after its offspring, Shalyam was all the while with them till they opened their eyes, all the while in my cupboard. After a fortnight when the kittens opened their eyes and for the first time took a look at the one who endowed then with life and sustained them all these days, Shalyam lovingly moved them to the store room which she felt would give her kids more space to run around and play. This was done very carefully and gently cupping the kittens by the neck. And guess what next , Shalyam started to go out hunting to get food for her little ones, (something that got on my nerves because its not very pleasant to have dead mice , lizards, chameleons and at times snakes lying around the house and stinking !!).
But what caught my attention was that while Meow did not even seem to register that he is a proud dad of two kittens but Shalyam all the while turned out to be such a responsible mommy.. How does nature do this? Which genes in Shalyam are encoded in a manner that she knows that her kittens are her top most priority? And this is how it goes for all the species except for humans, for humans are so advanced that nature can no longer code their genes and include love for fellow beings in it.
